This Valentine’s Day, Sistah Sinema celebrates the revolutionary act of a queer woman of color loving another queer women of color by honoring our favorite South Sound queer women of color couples.

After the screening, Christa Bell will perform erotic poetry. Christa Bell is a witch who casts social change, a cultural healer, a transformer, an artist. Her work includes the award-winning the one-woman show CoochieMagik: A Spoken Word Musical Comedy,

The films:

Sisters in the Life (23 mins) - First Love: A thirty-something black lesbian reflects on falling for her best friend in junior high. Set in the seventies and nineties, this is a delightful tale of love and friendship. Yvonne Welbon incorporates recreated flash-backs and real reminiscences, mixes media and styles, and throws in an original tune that embodies the essence of young love.

A Luv Tale (45 mins) - Directed by Sidra Smith, this audience favorite features MC Lyte, Tichina Arnold (Martin), and Gina Ravera (Showgirls). Photographer Taylor James (Gina Ravera of Soul Food, Kiss the Girls, and Showgirls) woos fashion magazine editor Candice over wine and candlelight, but too much stress and a rocky 12-year relationship with her boss/boyfriend are holding Candice back. Meanwhile, Taylor’s meddling best friend Aklia (played by rap star MC Lyte) tries to discourage her relationship with the older Montgomery.

Sistah Sinema events showcase movies highlighting queer women of color stories. They are also amazing opportunities to connect with educated, community-oriented queer women of color who are doing big things.

After each post movie discussion, attendees are asked to connect with someone they did not know before the event, exchange contact information, and discuss ways to build community in the future
