One of the problems with this “either/or” approach—that this issue is either “black” or “white”—is that it creates a false dichotomy between LGBT issues and other issues of social justice. Another is that it fosters a hierarchy of oppression in which certain matters are placed at the top of the political agenda while others are tabled.
In D.C., Questions About Police Bias After An Assault
Yazzmen Morse, a 21-year-old District resident, and four friends were walking toward the Columbia Heights Metro station in the wee hours of July 30 when two men approached and tried to “flirt” with them. One of the women said she was “not interested” and pointed out that Ms. Morse was her girlfriend.
“I will kick that dyke bitch’s ass,” one man threatened, according to a police report.

Adding deep concern to this alarming trend is that law-enforcement officers have responded inadequately in too many of these situations. We rightly expect the police to protect our most vulnerable communities from hate violence, even when humanity and a collective sense of decency cannot do so. Sadly, in some cases of anti-LGBT violence, victims and activists have charged that the police have compounded already harrowing experiences by fueling the hostility.

UK Denies Visa for Ugandan LGBT Advocate
Britain’s Border Agency (UKBA) has denied a visa for Freedom and Roam Uganda (FARUG) founder and executive Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera, who was scheduled to open a pride celebration in Derry, Northern Ireland later this month. Paul Canning reports that a UKBA spokesperson said that her visa was denied because Immigration officials feared that she might not return home after travelling to Britain.
