Cameroon Lawyer Receives Award for Defending LGBT Rights
Media has a tendency to focus solely on the atrocities happening to our LGBT brothers and sisters aboard and overlook the revolutionary work happening in their support. Alice Nkom, a lawyer in Cameroon, was recently awarded Amnesty International’s 2014 Human Rights Award for her work advocating protections for LGBT people in Africa.
Same-sex acts are currently illegal in Cameroon and carry a five-year prison sentence.
According to BBC, the 69-year-old became the first Black woman to be called to the bar in Cameroon in 1969. She vowed to continue her work despite death threats and warnings from government officials that she could face imprisonment.
