After an ongoing battle with Lupus, natural hair vlogger Domineque Banks (known on YouTube as “Long Hair Don’t Care2011”) passed away on April 9. According to the fundraising site set up to help with funeral costs, Banks fell unconscious (her partner, Gentria, was by her side to perform CPR and call 911) and was placed on life support after being unable to breathe on her own. After suffering a heart attack, she passed away at the age of 27.

Domineque and her partner

Banks documented her hair journey for more than ten years. With tutorials, tips, and more, she was an inspiration to Black girls and women everywhere. The natural hair community and other supporters rallied together and surprised the GiveForward online fundraiser goal of $10,000 in a day.

Her spouse left a touching message thanking folks who supported the campaign: “Thanks to you all, we have exceeded our goal and can now have Domineque’s family present to celebrate her homegoing. She loved all of her supporters, friends and family very much. I am happy she is no longer in pain and I will forever miss and love my Boodha. See you soon Domineque. I love you…” Photos of the couple, filled with lots of love and smiles, can be viewed on the fundraising page with heart-warming captions like “<3 Domineque & the love of her life!!! <3″.

Rest in power, Domineque. Our thoughts are with her family, partner, and loved ones.
