Groundbreaking Report Looks at Challenges LGBT Workers of Color Face

A new report from a coalition of advocacy groups explores employment and economic barriers for LGBT workers of color. The National Black Justice Coalition, the Center for American Progress and its FIRE initiative, the Movement Advancement Project, the Human Rights Campaign, and Freedom to Work have partnered to launch A Broken Bargain for LGBT Workers of Color.

The report examines how LGBT workers of color face unique challenges related to their race and ethnicity and their sexual orientation and/or gender identity in three areas: educational barriers; hiring bias and on-the-job discrimination; and unequal pay, benefits and taxation.

Some recommendations include eliminating or reducing educational barriers for LGBT youth of color (and thus weakening the school-to-prison pipeline) by passing legislation such as the Safe Schools Improvement Act (SSIA) and the Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA); and eliminating or reducing bias and discrimination against LGBT workers of color by ridding of policies and practices that exclude people from consideration for employment based on a criminal record or poor credit.

A Broken Bargain for LGBT Workers of Color explores how the experiences of these LGBT workers of color often do not exactly mirror the experiences of other workers of color, just as they often do not mirror the experiences of white LGBT workers. The reality is that LGBT workers of color often get the short end of the stick and can face bias because of their race, because of their sexual orientation or gender identity/expression, or both. It’s time we tip the scales in favor of equity, not just equality.
