“RuPaul’s Drag Race” Axes Transphobic Slurs
By Glennisha Morgan
Logo TV’s RuPaul’s Drag Race was recently scrutinized for airing a transphobic challenge called “Female or She-Male,” where contestants were shown celebrity photos and asked to identify the stars as either a “biological woman” or a “psychological woman.” The backlash from the transgender community has caused the MTV-owned network to pull the episode of Drag Race featuring the “female or she-male” sketch and also no longer use the phrase “You’ve got she-mail.” GLAAD met with the producers from MTV and Logo immediately after the episode aired.
On Monday, Logo announced the news in a statement to the Huffington Post:
We wanted to thank the community for sharing their concerns around a recent segment and the use of the term ‘she-mail’ on Drag Race. Logo has pulled the episode from all of our platforms and that challenge will not appear again. Furthermore, we are removing the ‘You’ve got she-mail’ intro from new episodes of the series. We did not intend to cause any offense, but in retrospect we realize that it was insensitive. We sincerely apologize.
