In a recent CNN interview, out news anchor Robin Roberts reflected on how coming out has impacted other LGBT people. In a story about a young man that approached CBS’ Gayle King, Roberts recounted how her visibility helped his mother in her journey to acceptance:

“Somebody came up to [Gayle]- and this catches me,” Roberts said while getting emotional. “A young man whose mother was having a tough time and said, ‘If it’s OK for Robin, it’s OK for my son.’”

The Good Morning America co-host admitted that she was so busy trying to survive her battle with cancer that she didn’t even think about having that kind of impact.

“I’m very grateful that it’s creating dialogue for families,” she added.

Last December, Roberts took to social media to thank her longtime girlfriend Amber Laign for her support. In a touching end-of-year message posted on Facebook, Roberts acknowledged her battle with cancer and loved ones that have helped her along the way. She later posted a photo with her partner and talked openly about their relationship for the first time on-air.
