WATCH: College Hoops Star Brittney Griner Talks About Being Lesbian Athlete
“It’s just being who you are,” said Brittney Griner, college basketball super star and the Phoenix Mercury’s number one draft pick, in a video interview with Sports Illustrated. “Don’t worry about what other people are going to say, because they’re always going to say something, but, if you’re just true to yourself, let that shine through.”
Griner (who is graduating from Baylor University in Waco, Texas this spring) added that her decision to come out “wasn’t too difficult.”
“I wouldn’t say I was hiding or anything like that,” she explained. “I’ve always been open about who I am and my sexuality.”

Wow! What a difference the 40 years after Title IX has made. I hope these young women athletes can appreciate the gift they have been given. As a college athlete from before Title IX, I am very excited to see the vast opportunities these young women have.
