Transgender people working in entertainment and journalism are changing representations of their community through their work. HuffPost Live talks to trans leaders in the media industry about their accomplishments and the challenges they face.

“We need to stop policing other people’s identities and bodies,” says Janet Mock, transgender activist and author of upcoming memoir Redefining Realness. ”We need to stop objectifying trans people, too. We just reduce trans people to their bodies and don’t really realize there’s a lot more life after transition.”

Viewers also receive a video message from Black trans violinist and vocalist Tona Brown, who has performed for President Barack Obama: “I strongly feel that the sensationalism in the media is partly to blame for some of the violence against trans people. We as entertainers have the power to change perceptions.”
