WNBA President Condemns Player Sophia Young’s Anti-Gay Tweet

ELIXHER

It’s no secret that the WNBA has a devoted lesbian fan base. What’s hotter and more entertaining than fierce female athletes kicking ass on the court (and in a male-dominated sport)? That is why it came as a surprise when WNBA all-star, Sophia Young, recently posted a series of anti-LGBT tweets. Young first took to Twitter on Wednesday, August 28 to voice her opposition to marriage equality in Texas.

In a statement emailed to The Huffington Post, WNBA President Laurel J. Richie said that while she supports the free speech rights of all her players, she could not condone Young’s particular viewpoint.

“Sophia has the right to express her point of view, however, I do not share her view,” Richie wrote. “The WNBA supports diversity and we are committed to the equal and fair treatment of all people.”

“It should be noted that Young appears confused in terms of what legislation San Antonio is actually considering,” Huffington Post points out. “In fact, the City Council is deciding whether or not to offer nondiscrimination protection for individuals based on sexual orientation and gender identity within already existing legislation. However, it is not considering legalizing same-sex marriage. Nevertheless, Young doubled down on her statement later that day with another tweet to fans.”

I’m not surprised. I’m tired of the homophobia in the black community. It only helps weakens us. If we embrace the black LGBT, it is one step closer to become a loving, supporter and quite frankly, stronger group. Isn’t this what we all want: power and strength!!!!
